3G for TSSG
By: Frances Cleary
Another Stepping Stone reached for the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) as they successfully win their quest for an Irish 3G Test Licence issued by the Commission for Communications regulation (ComReg). Third generation or 3G technology allows people to talk, watch a video clip, or surf the Internet – simultaneously – and all from one phone.
This is a huge boost to the research and development centre based at Waterford Institute of Technology, which currently employs an expert workforce of approximately 50 full-time people. The TSSG has established a reputation as a centre of excellence both nationally and internationally for research into the development and management of software services on emerging technology platforms.
Mr Miguel Ponce de Leon and Mr John Ronan from the TSSG were the main instigators in obtaining this 3G Test License, being actively involved from the initial proposal right through to acceptance of the 3G Test License. “The commission for Communications regulation (ComReg) actively encourages the authorisation of Radio Test licences to research & development centres wishing to carry out trials on new equipment, new spectrum applications or new services, in order to solve the capacity and capability problems of digital mobile networks”, says Miguel Ponce de Leon.
“Seeing the TSSG as a worthy applicant, highly involved in a number of cutting-edge Telecommunication Projects, they have issued us with a 3G Test Licence of 5MHz TD-CDMA, Mobile – IMT-2000 radio frequency, in the 2010 – 2025 MHz bandwidth.”
The 3G Test Licence was sought by the TSSG to aid its participation in the European Commission sixth framework research project ‘Daidalos’ (Designing Advanced network Interfaces for the Delivery and administration of Location independent, Optimised personal Service.) The vision of Daidalos is of a world where personalised services of mobile users can be seamlessly supported and integrated by a range of heterogeneous network technologies, enabling the development of new business activities and profitable services in this integrated mobile world.
Acting third party Motorola Ireland Ltd has committed their support by supplying specified equipment to the TSSG, to aid relevant tests using the 3G test Licence. The future is bright as TSSG spearheads its way in the Telecommunications World, broadening the dimensions of the 3G Technology towards the next generation.
