The Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at the Waterford Institute of Technology is offering the following internships to recently graduated students:
Opening 1 – Summer Internship – Web Application Developer
This opportunity will involve working as a developer on innovative mobile web applications. Suitable candidates should have a strong programming background with expertise in JavaScript, HTML and CSS also preferable. Other desirable criteria include:
• Good understanding of user interface design
• Competent in the use of a software IDE
• Cursory knowledge of Java, XML, JSON and/or scripting languages (e.g. Bash, Python, Perl)
• Working knowledge of the Unix operating system
• Knowledge of SQL database systems
• Knowledge of Agile development processes
Day-to-day duties in this role may include:
• Working within a team under the supervision of the project manager to deliver innovative web applications using an online IDE
• Develop test code where appropriate
• Work closely with the quality assurance team to ensure software process adherence
• Design and develop software components to standard interfaces
• Work with external partners in a professional manner
• Be able to describe and explain computer science concepts in everyday language
Opening 2 – Summer Internship – Junior Operations Engineer
This opportunity will involve working as part of an operations team that is responsible for the delivery of variety of services to an enterprise cloud platform as well as a number of customers and staff oriented online services. Suitable candidates should have a cursory programming background with practical expertise in a Unix (Linux) operating system. Other desirable criteria include:
• Good understanding of networking essentials (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS)
• Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Bash, Python, Perl) and SQL database systems
• Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, HTML, XML and JSON
• Be competent in a Unix command-line environment
• Knowledge of Agile development processes
Day-to-day duties in this role may include:
• Working within a team under the supervision of the operations manager
• Research and configuration of online services such as user forums, knowledge bases, WIKIs, blogs
• Development of automated test tools using scripting languages
• Work closely with the quality assurance team to ensure software process adherence
• Design and develop software components to standard interfaces
• Work with external partners in a professional manner
• Be able to describe and explain computer science concepts in everyday language

About the TSSG
The Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) is one of the leading Information Communications Technologies (ICT) research centres in Europe. Based in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), the research-taking place in the TSSG is re-defining the Future Internet and its services, whether on a PC, a laptop or a mobile phone.
The TSSG is funded by HEA and SFI funds in Ireland. It has secured the largest share of EU FP7 funding in Ireland, and a large share of Enterprise Ireland’s (EI’s) commercialisation funds for ICT. The TSSG research ethos is to build links between academic and industrial research through the creation of a balanced portfolio of activity in: Basic Research, Applied Research and Commercial activity. Currently the TSSG is active in around 45 research projects, with budgets ranging from €100k to €3.5M and totalling over €60 Million from 1996-2010. The TSSG has been directly involved in the process of creating 14 spin-out and spin-in companies in this period, contributing directly over 60 new jobs to the region externally. The TSSG itself has 160 staff and a 14-year track record in telecommunications management, with Dr Willie Donnelly, Director of the TSSG, as the principal investigator.
