Dr. Ruairi de Fréin attends TIDA Workshop

Congratulations to Dr. Ruairi de Fréin, a TSSG Postdoctoral Research fellow and member of the SFI funded strategic research group FAME, one of twelve applications selected to attend the Technology Innovation Development Award Programme (TIDA) organised by the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI). The TIDA 2012 entrepreneurship training course will take place at the DCU Ryan Academy for Entrepreneurship located at the Citywest campus in Dublin.

The TIDA 2012 entrepreneurship training course will run four, two-day workshops.Its target audience is postdoctoral researchers in active SFI funded research projects. The course aims to educate postdocs on a variety of subjects pertaining to commercialisation and entrepreneurship. The modules include topics such as Technology Entrepreneurship, Market Feasibility & Exploratory Research, Managing Legal Aspects of Start-Ups, Technology Assessment & Commercialisation Opportunity, New Product Development and Innovation, Venture Capital & Funding Models Finance and Cash Flow, Intellectual Property, Trade Marks and Copyright, Sustainable Competitive Advantage and Positioning, Technology Sales, Marketing & Branding with the final module session entitled “From Lab to Product” consisting of elevator pitches to groups of Venture Capitalists.

The goal of the training course is to provide entrepreneurship skills to postdoctoral researchers to enable them to effectively assess the translational and commercial potential of their research, to develop a commercial case around a researched technology and to create a network of researchers who will interact regularly with each other, with SFI, Enterprise Ireland and the Technology Transfer Office of their host institute.

As a member of the FAME strategic research cluster, Dr. de Fréin expressed a personal desire to further develop his own commercialization skills in order to complement the work he is undertaking as part of TIDA feasibility study award which is being led by Dr William Donnelly. The TIDA feasibility study award funds the development of a commercialization ready prototype. Dr. de Fréin is certain that the knowledge and insights gained at the TIDA 2012 entrepreneurship training course will also have an enormous indirect benefit for other FAME SRC members wishing to exploit research ideas. Dr. de Fréin attributes his successful application to both the international standing, reputation and timeliness of FAME’s research.

The TIDA 2012 entrepreneurship training course commenced on Friday 27th, and included postdoc researchers from SFI’s research priority areas and from a number of universities including UCC, DCU, UCD and TCD.
