Prof Willie Donnelly Number 5 on the IoT movers and Shakers List

Willie_webAs part of Siliconrepublic.com’s IoT Makers Week, editor John Kennedy has rounded up the movers, shakers and makers to watch in the emerging Internet of Things space.

WIT’s President, Prof Willie Donnelly, comes in at number 5 of the 25 Irish and Ireland-based leaders, scientists and technologists who are putting the country on the global map in terms of the internet of things (IoT) revolution.

Here’s what Silicon Republic had to say about Prof Donnelly’s influence on one of the most important movements in information technology in recent times:

“From Ireland’s southeast to the world, the influence of Waterford Institute of Technology’s TSSG research engine is unparalleled.

In about a decade, the TSSG under Prof Willie Donnelly’s leadership has grown to spin out 10 direct companies that have created 600 jobs in the region. The research group was also the home of FeedHenry, the software company acquired last year by Red Hat for €63.5m, one of the largest acquisitions of an Irish campus company to date.”

The full list includes other eminent academics including Prof Brian MacCraith from DCU at number 3; Dr Dirk Pesch from the Nimbus Centre (CIT) at number 7; the Tyndall National Institute’s Dr Kieran Drain comes in at 12; TCD’s Prof Linda Doyle, Connect (TCD) is at 14; 15th place is held by Prof Brian Caulfield from the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (UCD); NUIG’s Dr Martin Serrano is at 22; Brian Cahill from the Nimbus Centre (CIT) is at 23 and  Prof Rob Kitchin, Maynooth University holds the 24th spot.
