Fiware photoThrough their EU-India FI-MEDIA project, Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunication Software & System Group (TSSG) group has recently organised two events in India in relation to building of EU – India cooperation, including  an event dedicated to bringing the EU’s FIWARE program to India in the context of smart environments including smart cities, smart villages , and smart campus.

FIWARE  is an EU led initiative that was started as part of a Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP), which is comprised of an Advanced OpenStack-based Cloud + rich library of Generic Enablers (GE) that make the development process much easier by hiding complexities (e.g. protocols) from the developers.

A number of the major differential features of FIWARE are available including those related to Cloud, Data, IoT, Smart city / energy related apps, MiWi, Security, privacy and others.

According to the EU-India FI-MEDIA coordinator, James Clarke, “Although born in the EU, through the FIWARE Mundus global component, FIWARE is being extended towards other regions around the world who share the ambition, including India and via our EU-India FI-MEDIA project activities, there is a welcomed opportunity to form a FIWARE Cluster to Cluster (C2C) partnership with the important stakeholders and key topics in India, such as smart cities, smart villages, smart campus, M2M, IoT, etc.

The EU-India FI-MEDIA project has recently organised two successful C2C partnership workshops in India, during December, 2015 and January, 2016:

1. 18 December, 2015: EU-India FI-MEDIA – Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) workshop on the C2C topic Smart Villages Ecosystems; venue: IIT Delhi. Report available HERE

2. 22 January, 2016: FIWARE – Smart environments workshop on the necessary underlying framework for the setting up of a FIWARE region in India, and how FIWARE can concretely be used for the development of “smart environments” in India (e.g., smart cities, smart villages, smart campus). This event was co-located with a larger scale event being held in IITD entitled International Conference on Smart Cities (ICSC 2016) held on 22nd – 23rd  January, 2016, venue: IIT Delhi. The full report can be found at HERE

The EU-India FI-MEDIA project is an International cooperation mobility project funded by the Delegation of the European Union to India, under a programme entitled ICI+, which is instrumental in the formation of mutually beneficial EU-India cluster to cluster (C2C) partnerships in a variety of Lots, including Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), the focal point of our four year project (Dec. 2014 – Dec. 2018).
