MSc by Research and PhD by Research Positions

Applications are invited for MSc by Research and PhD by Research positions with the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) ( at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), Waterford, Ireland.

The candidate will work as a member of the Science Foundation Ireland funded Centre for Future Networks and Communications “CONNECT” Research Centre, comprising TSSG and research groups from Irish universities including Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, Mynooth University, Tyndall National Institute and Dublin MSc by Research and PhD by Research Positions Institute of Technology.  CONNECT comprises 11 Academic partners and 37 Industry partners including Google, Intel, IBM, Cisco, Ericsson and is one of the largest group of researchers worldwide addressing challenges relating to Future Networks and Communications.

The candidate will investigate areas such as Software Defined Networking, Network Function Virtualization, Cloud and Fog Computing paradigms, Internet of Things. The work will take place in close collaboration with one of the CONNET industrial partners, in particular DellEMC, Intel, IBM, Ericsson or CISCO and the candidate will spend a significant amount of time working in that partner’s laboratories.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A primary degree (first-class honours preferred) in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems or a cognate discipline.
  • Strong engineering skills including experience of test-bed deployment/experimentation and programming.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.


The candidate will receive a non-taxable stipend of €18,000 per annum for a period of 2 years for MSc by Research and 4 years for PhD by Research. Tuition fees will be paid separately.
