Ph: +353 (0)51 845693
Martin joined Telecommunication Software & Systems Group (TSSG) of Waterford Institute of Technology in 2014. His current role within TSSG is as the Technical Lead with the Mobile Services Research Unit.
Prior to joining TSSG Martin was a senior embedded software engineer with ABB. Primary responsibility was the design and development of on-line paper measurement sensors and control for the pulp and paper industry. This covered a vast array of technologies, both embedded and at the application level and provided an opportunity to explore and integrate some of the latest technologies and tools into the development process. Martin also worked in the Consumer Devices industry for several years. Primary responsibility was for the development of Digital TVs and Set Top Boxes that were compatible with emerging digital terrestrial television standards (DVB-T).
Current Activities / Research Interests
Martin’s primary role is as the Technical Coordinator for the 5G PPP CogNET project which is coordinated by Tssg. The CogNet project will make a major contribution towards the autonomic management of the telecoms network infrastructure by using the available network data and applying Machine Learning algorithms to yield insights, recognise events and conditions and respond correctly to them. The project goal is to develop solutions that will provide a higher and more intelligent level of automated monitoring and management of networks and applications, improve operational efficiencies and facilitate the requirements of 5G.
Martin is also involved in the project management of the OneStream Innovation Partnership which provides a webcasting service to a number of Irish organisations/bodies such as the Law Society, The Four Courts and the Irish Management Institute.
Previous projects includes an Innovation Partnership with Waterford Technologies which investigated and implemented a data archival solution that utilises multiple cloud vendors to provide customers with secure, encrypted and reliable access to all of their data. Although the project was primarily utilising the Microsoft Azure platform and Microsoft technologies, it also provides assurances to customers by including the capability of utilising any cloud provider for the storage of their data.
Martin has a strong interest in emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoTaaS), Telecoms (5G) and Cloud Technologies.
In 2000, Martin graduated from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) with a honors Bachelor of Engineering in Digital and Software Systems. Prior to this Martin also completed the Diploma and National Certificate in Electronic Engineering, also from GMIT. Martin is currently studying for a masters degree in computing (Communications Software) in Waterford Institute of Technology.
