IMenabled

Giving power to the local government agencies to create IM services using this software will help to expose the huge potential of IM services in general as well as validating the software developed. Local government agencies also serve as a target for initial deployment of the technology pending a successful validation. The push type communications infrastructure offered is very appealing to local governments as information can now be sent instantly to citizens at a time that suits them rather than relying on expensive, traditional and slow methods of postage.

The TSSG is the creator of the proposal and also the lead partner in the project. Furthering a working relationship with two of the partner sites (PSI and ICPP) the TSSG is branching out into new contacts with companies like Fullsix (France and Italy) and also with a number of local government bodies who will serve as the main validation agents of the software developed.

Ideas for im-enabling eGovernment services are currently indicating the exposure of RSS feeds and public notification systems that would benefit from the presence features offered by the IM technology used. One of the partners, City of Turin, has thousands of RSS feeds that are mostly ignored by the public. Their assessment of this situation is that many people just do not go back to the website to read the updates nor do they use specialised RSS readers to facilitate regular reading. The benefit of IM technology in this space is that updates can be pushed to the end-user when they login to their client therefore enabling a more active distribution of the content to the community. Another example of utilising the presence features of the technology would be a wheelie bin service that would utilise presence as a mechanism of indicating the correct colour bin to be collected on a given week. Most local corporations in Ireland use colour coded bins to differentiate between recyclable materials and landfill waste. People are constantly forgetting which bin is collected on which week and as such this service would be of benefit as it operates outside of normal office hours and is there when the people need to check it.
