GAISS
GAISS is a project intended to aid in real-time operations involving geographically-dispersed teams. The example chosen for the proof-of-concept is Mountain Rescue, but it is intended that GAISS will be of use in other similar areas (utilities companies, event organisation, etc).
The GAISS system makes use of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers connected via lowbandwidth radio data communications to an Incident Command Post (ICP). At the ICP, the search co-ordinator will use the GAISS software for visualisation of search team progress, and for search planning. To aid in the search planning task, the GAISS software provides assistance with resource allocation tasks, and near-real-time location tracking of rescue teams and other search assets. GAISS is a proof-of-concept funded by Enterprise Ireland, with a total budget of e83280. The project ran for 12 months, beginning 2nd. October 2006, and finished 28th. September

The aim of GAISS is to produce a proof-of-concept system integrating live positioning from infield units with a statistical asset allocation system. The project comprises three major sections: visualisation, scene management utilities, and the predictive asset allocation engine.The main benefit envisaged by GAISS is during a search operation. By providing better tracking of search teams, GAISS will speed up debriefing of search teams. The asset allocation module will assist in the planning of search paths throughout the operation. By using statistics about previous missing persons’ behaviour and known attractions and dangers in the search area, the software can suggest initial search areas, and as the search progresses, reprioritise search areas based on previous searches.
