Esfors

The emergence of open service platforms such as web services provides major opportunities to position the European software industry at the heart of the emerging information society. However, the uptake of solutions based on software by industry is dependent on industry confidence in their security and dependability.

The project is positioned to support the emergence of software and services platform architecture ensuring the incorporation of security and dependability best practice.

The project will complement already existing coordination actions, e.g. SecurIST, to help shape the security and dependability content within the European Strategic Research Agenda. It will co-operate with SecurIST to ensure that open service requirements are incorporated into the SecurIST security and dependability technology roadmap and that the roadmap is incorporated into the research agenda of the software and service research community. ESFORS will act as a bridge between these two communities: the software and services application community and the security and dependability community.

ESFORS is a Coordination Action that aims at bringing together the European stakeholders for security and dependability information and communication technologies to address the security and dependability research agenda for open services, software and systems. The project will also complement already existing coordination actions, e.g. SecurIST, to establish a secure web services framework for communication networks and information infrastructures in Europe. The main outcome of the project will be to bring together European players for reinforcing the position of security within web services, software and systems. This coordination action will bring consensus of a security framework for the stakeholders around Europe that will be responsible for the strengthening of European industry for security, dependability and resilience of systems, services and infrastructures.

ESFORS will bring EU players on security and trust together to support a multidisciplinary framework that will constitute one step towards developing a European strategy for research and development on secure web services, software and services. ESFORS will promote and support the networking and coordination of European stakeholders on security and dependability strategy. Moreover, ESFORS will provide the guidelines for the direction that Security and Dependability research should take within the ESRA on software and services.

The main objective of ESFORS is to bring together security stakeholders to develop a security framework for web services, software and systems that will be key elements for the European technology platforms of FP7. This involves the coordination of groups of experts collaborating to develop a roadmap on security issues to strengthen the European industry and make it the most competitive knowledge based society for 2010. Web services are an increasingly important layer of the European software platform architecture. The development of a strong security and dependability framework is essential to the introduction of web services into key areas of the information society, such as corporate wireless networks or Internet banking.

The establishment of a Pan European Industry and Academic forum addressing security and dependability issues for software, services and systems

The development of a Strategic Security Research agenda in support of Framework Programme 7 software and Services research initiatives. ESFORS will feed into the definition of the ESRA in the European Technology Platform on software and services (which is in the process of being set-up by industry) resulting in the magnification of the ESFORS project’s results.

The specification of an Industry framework, agreed by European stakeholders, for security, dependability and resilience of systems, services and infrastructures.
