M-Mag

mMag uses the metaphor of the “mobile magazine” to simplify the process of creating mBusiness services for SMEs. An mMag mobile magazine is a next generation mobile service that is indirectly made available from a mobile operator’s portal (e.g. Vodafone Live or O2 Active), that is integrated with value added mobile data services such as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Short Message Service (SMS) and Location Based Services (LBS), and uses the operator’s billing capabilities to charge consumers for access to mobile services.

The mMag service is comprised of three major subsystems; a) Magazine Studio, b) Operator Integrator and c) the mMag portal. The Magazine Studio enables SME users to, through a simple set of wizards and templates create a mobile website. Through the use of the Operator Integrator the SME can add Value Added Services, such as LBS, MMS and SMS, which normally require direct network integration, to its mobile content. And through the use of the mMag portal they are able to host this content. This mMag portal is linked to numerous network operators thus providing the SME with an easy link into many networks, and providing the network operators with many services.

Extended Description

The mMag service is a hosted, or ASP (Application Service Provider), service for SMEs, that enables them to use Web based tools to create new and innovative mobile commerce services. One of the mMag service’s key benefits to SMEs is the ability to integrate value added mobile services, which require access to mobile operator networks, such as SMS, MMS and LBS. This can be done through a series of “wizard” based user interfaces. Thus, the mMag service provides a full solution for SMEs which includes:

  • creation of mobile services (publishing and value added services) using entry level or power user tools.
  • hosting of these services.
  • access to mobile operator networks.
  • positioning on mobile operator portals.
  • as well as accounting and revenue share management.

The mMag service also supports the concept of a personalised service environment for consumers of SME mobile services (end-users), which provides them with access to their services on a trans-European basis, as well as local (or location based) services while travelling throughout the Union (e.g. cultural or tourism based services).

The mMag project was funded by the European Commission e-ten programme. The total budget of the project was approximately 2million Euro and it has a lifecycle of 18 months and ran until May 2007.
