TSSG researchers Awarded "Best Paper" award at international conferences

Researchers from the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology have enjoyed a double success in receiving awards at two prestigious international conferences.

At the eChallenges e-2009 conference and exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey, Prof John Strassner, Dr Sven van der Meer, Dr Brendan Jennings and Miguel Ponce de Leon of TSSG won the best paper award as judged by a panel of independent experts who assessed over 150 academic papers presented over three days at the European Commission-supported conference.

At eChallenges e-2009, over 650 delegates addressed topics including ICT for networked enterprises; eGovernment and eDemocracy; eHealth; technology enhanced learning; intelligent content; identity management; collaborative working environments; living labs; eInfrastructures; high performance computing applications; smart and virtual organisations; mobility and security.

The aims of the conference which has an international reputation for high quality papers were to facilitate international research cooperation and successful exploitation of research results; to promote knowledge and experience sharing; to identify new partners and to support international cooperation.

Separately, Dr Jennings – a senior research fellow at TSSG - and his colleague Paul Malone, a researcher with the group, won the ‘best paper’ award at the MEDES (Management of Emergent Digital Ecosystems) conference in Lyon, France where theirs was one of 75 papers presented by academics from Asia, Europe, north America and south America.

Commenting on the awards, Dr Jennings said: “It is very gratifying to have our work recognised by colleagues in the international research community, especially as these awards underline the high quality of the research outputs from TSSG where our work concentrates on telecommunications network management and mobile services as well as how best to build the Future Internet. This work is also endorsed by our current engagement in 11 EU-funded research projects concerning the Future Internet and the range of other programmes we are involved in that have made this one of the largest ICT research and innovation centres in Ireland.”

Meanwhile, as Internet usage continues to soar worldwide with an increasing number of transactions conducted online, a key European report (RISEPTIS report), on internet security, dependability and trustworthiness driven by the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) leading role in the Think Trust (www.think-trust.eu) project, has recently been published.

This strategic report will be presented later this week at the second annual meeting of the Irish Future Internet Forum in Dublin’s Digital Hub on Thursday by Jacques Bus, Head of Unit Trust & Security (F5) of the European Commission’s Directorate General Information Society & Media.
