Innovation In Construction – Technology Gateways

Thursday, 14th September, 2017

Carlton Hotel, Dublin.

Every company, including those in the construction sector, has its day-to-day challenges; challenges which can have a dramatic effect on their performance and profitability. One proven way to face such challenges is to innovate/develop new products and explore new opportunities to deal with them at source. Understandably, exploring the different Innovation options which are available to companies can be daunting, seen as a drain on resources or simply too time consuming.

To remove these potential obstacles for companies, two Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway Clusters, A-IoT (Applied Internet of Things) and EMD Ireland (Engineering Materials & Design) are teaming up to introduce some of the options available in the innovation and research area.

The theme of this free event is focused on innovation within the construction industry. In particular it will emphasise the importance of innovation in this pre-Brexit era. The Enterprise Ireland Brexit team will be in attendance to highlight concerns and advise on potential Brexit issues which may directly impact your business. Together with specialised presentations and case studies from a range of Technology Gateways currently involved in the Engineering, Materials and Design and Internet of Things (IoT) space.

TSSG will have a stand at this event, showcasing some of our VR & AR Projects relating to construction.

The theme for 2017 is “Testing in the 4th Industrial Revolution”. The Word Economic Forum has declared that we are entering the 4th Industrial Revolution, as access to real time data and the focus on all things digital and instantaneous impact every area of life. Testers have always been at the coal face of ensuring that “stuff works as it should”. Is there anything different in the actual testing of new digital products, new interfaces with clients which must always provide the optimum user experience? How are testers coping? What are the stories coming in? What is working well and what can be done better?

mHealth National Summit

Croke Park, Dublin

7th February 2017

health-2

Our Health Service: What do we need? When will we get it?

Everyone agrees that a single vision for healthcare in Ireland is an essential first step in a long-term plan to create the health service that we need. The recently formed Oireachtas cross-party committee on the future of healthcare is an unprecedented move in this direction and a welcome response to the obvious and well-known failings of our health service. But, will this new initiative turn out to be a mere talking shop? Or the answer to creating a long-term roadmap for reform of healthcare that will be implemented no matter who is in government over the next decade? That’s just one of the issues we’ll be covering at The 13th National Health Summit in February.

We’re bringing together a range of experts and practitioners from the OECD, the UK and the Irish health service to explore, discuss and debate solutions to some of the toughest challenges we are facing. We’ve also introduced dedicated streams on 3 key themes:

  • Delivering care in the right way and the right place focusing on health outcomes
  • Putting power in the patients hands
  • Reshaping the workforce for our future healthcare service

For well over a decade now the National Health Summit has been a key event for Healthcare leaders and we do hope you can join us again in 2017 for what promises to be an engaging and insightful day.

The event is being held at Hanoi National University with the following objectives:
• to set up an open discussion on new collaboration avenues in cyber security inside and outside Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in particular, with the European Union), in areas of common interest: research/technological/market trends; emerging opportunities for collaboration; barriers and ways to overcome them, etc.;
• To exchange good practice (both ASEAN and international) on the topics of common interest; share the experience, vision and discuss the cooperation and project ideas;
• To develop recommendations and action proposals to the bodies in charge of cyber security (ICT RDI and Cyber Security Administration).

James Clarke, of Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunications, Software and Systems Group (TSSG), is participating at this event, which is entitled International Cooperation on Cyber Security: Towards the New Avenues.   Participation to this event is very opportunistic for Mr. Clarke’s international cooperation efforts in the last number of years and the work and lessons learned within the FP7 BIC project will definitely be discussed and examined how it can be related to the participation of the ASEAN regions. Mr. Clarke will also have the opportunity to present and promote the work that was done within the EU’s Network Information Security Platform (NIS Platform), where he is a member of the steering committee of Work Group 3 on Secure ICT Research and Innovation. Mr. Clarke was co-author of a chapter entitled, Area of Interest 2: Resilient Digital Civilisation (Collective layer), in the recently published Strategic Research Agenda carried out by WG3.

The Impact of Digital Technology – Implications for the Compliance Professional, Dublin.

Wednesday, 25th November 2015 – 9.00am – 11.00am

Hilton Hotel, Dublin

The adoption of various digital technologies by consumers to access transactions online and via smart phones, has raised expectations of the products and services they receive from financial services providers. It has transformed the way customers and financial service providers engage with each other. Benefits to providers are the ability to further understand and profile customers in much greater detail than before. New products, delivery channels, operating models and metrics can result in cost savings and revenue opportunities for the providers.

On the other hand technologies can be quite disruptive to business, enable new entrants to enter with relative ease and “cherry-pick” the more lucrative product and service offerings that other providers offer as part of a full service offering.

Whilst compliance practitioners appreciate the positive impact on the bottom line by adopting digital technologies there are implications for them to consider. Externally enhanced technologies have resulted in less face-to-face interaction with customers, with correspondent concerns raised on issues of AML/CTF – KYC, suspicious transactions, cybersecurity, data protection etc. Internally, tensions arise when different departments with new offerings interpret resistance as the response from their compliance colleagues. When in fact they are trying to make balanced decisions on developing such offering whilst ensuring adherence to regulations, internal controls and the safeguarding of the firm’s reputation.

Topics discussed in this talk will include:

Barry Downes will discuss the range of technologies in the sector. The challenges they present and developments in the future. He will share insights from TSSG projects conducted in data protection, fraud detection and AML. He will also consider lessons that can be learnt from other sectors, retail, telcomms.
Martin Purdy will speak from a compliance practitioner perspective on the challenges such technologies create and how they are being addressed.

ICT 2015 – Innovate, Connect, Transform .

Workshop Session: ‘Agriculture 4.0 The Internet of Things boosting regional innovation’

October, 22 2015. Room 7 (9.00 am – 9.45 am)
Lisbon, Portugal .

The European Commission, together with the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia bring you: ICT 2015 – Innovate, Connect, Transform, on 20-22 October 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Workshop Session: ‘Agriculture 4.0 The Internet of Things boosting regional innovation’
Hosted by Brian Foley, Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), Ireland.

Leveraging advances in information and communication technologies in traditional industries is a frequently untapped source of value added that has the potential to propel early adapters towards acquiring global competitive advantages. Such a potential is clear today in agriculture, where ICT advances are enticing businesses to rethink their processes along the full value chain – from the field to the table – and consider a vast array of innovations.

At the same time societal challenges foresee serious potential impacts on the agro-food sector: concerns include food security and food safety, energy efficiency, efficiency and sustainability of the use of resources.

There is a vast range of innovations that businesses and consumers are looking forward to in the agro-food industry: from sensors providing ever more accurate data, visualisation and predictions of conditions for farming; autonomous monitoring and interventions in farming and food production processes; highly integrated communication from sensors to tractors to processing and logistics infrastructures; monitoring and control systems informing and assuring consumers of food safety and sustainability, to name a few.

Interlinking the ICT industry with the agro-food value chain – including farmers, food processing industry, distributors, retailers, regulators, and end consumers – to discuss current unsolved challenges is of essence to identify where ICTs – and IoT in particular – have the greatest potential impact. Digital Enlightenment Forum 2015

www.digitalenlightenment.org

Wednesday, March 25th and Thursday, March 26th
Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny

The Enlightenment movement of the 18th Century, marked a shift in individual-state-enterprise relationships, today the Digital Enlightenment movement works to better understand the ways in which individuals, governments and enterprises are redefining their relationship through the use of technology.

The theme of this year’s conference is: the individual (in her many societal roles) in relation to the ever increasing dimensions of the technological (digital) environment. We bring together a range of views: technologists, anthropologists, engineers, social scientists, entrepreneurs, designers, policy makers and leaders of civil society organisations in order to better understand how humans engage with digital life and which options emerge.

Given the rapid pace at which non-anticipated technological innovations develop and swiftly integrate in peoples’ lives, new ways of thinking and talking about the role of ‘the digital’ are required, thus allowing people to have a complete and correct understanding of what their real options are and to help develop meaningful forms of accountability, transparency and regulation of data processing, that can keep pace with the ‘bit per second’ lives of individuals today.

Digital Enlightenment Forum aims, through these new ways of thinking and talking about “The Citizen – Negotiating life in The Digital World” to develop proposals for how best to move forward. The inter-relation between individuals and the technological environment will define the future organization of living, working and citizenship.
