Congratulations to Dr Alan Davy and Dr Steven Davy, both of whom graduated with PhDs on Thursday October 23rd. Alan and Steven are remaining with TSSG, as postdoctoral research fellows on the EFIPSANS and Autonomic Internet European FP7 projects, respectively.
I delivered the keynote address at the 2nd IEEE Workshop on Autonomic Communications and Network Management in Salvador, Brazil on April 11th. The title of
my address was "Autonomic network management: how do we govern self-managing networks?". Download the presentations slides here (zipped pdf 4.1Mb)

I am a Senior Investigator on the Science Foundation Ireland funded Autonomic Management of Communications Networks and Services four year research programme, which is led by Dr William Donnelly (WIT) and John Strassner (Motorola Labs / WIT Visiting Professor). This programme seeks to develop novel methodologies, architectures, processes and algorithms to enable autonomic network management. The essence of autonomic management is the ability for a system to self-govern its behaviour within the constraints of the business goals that the system as a whole seeks to achieve. To achieve autonomic network management we propose the use of information modelling to capture knowledge relating to network capabilities, environmental constraints and business goals/policies, together with reasoning and learning techniques to enhance and evolve this knowledge. Knowledge embedded within system models will be used by policy-based network management systems incorporating translation/code generation and policy enforcement processes that automatically configure network elements in response to changing business goals and/or environmental context. My work on the programme focusses primarily on prevention, detection and resolution of conflicts between groups of deployed policies.
I am also Principal Investigator on the Science Foundation Ireland funded Accounting for Dynamically Composed Services research frontiers project. This three year project, running from late 2005 to late 2008, addresses a crucial problem that must be solved before dynamic service composition becomes commercially viable - how can users be charged for the use of composed services? Focussing on charging and rating for communications services, the programme will develop a domain-specific modelling language for accounting, models for accounting logic supporting dynamic service composition, together with processes, algorithms and architectures to support automated generation and deployment of platform specific mediation and rating logic.
I am a member of the WIT team participating in the European Commission funded Network of Excellence on Open Philosophies for Associative Autopoietic Digital Ecosystems (OPAALS). OPAALS overarching aims are to build a sustainable interdisciplinary research community in the emerging area of digital ecosystems and to develop an integrated theoretical foundation for digital ecosystems research, which spans three widely different disciplinary domains: social science, computer science, and natural science. Working in the computer science domain, the WIT team are investigating models and processes for distributed knowledge sharing, distributed accountability, distributed trust, and distributed identity that will be appropriate for a wide range of digital ecosystems.
